Tesoros patrimoniales / Heritage treasures
pensar.
Among the
few encomiendas that, in reality, the Knights Templar had in that medieval
Spain of kingdoms and alliances that were beginning to unify, making common
cause against the Muslim invasion, one of the most important was located,
precisely here, in Villalcázar de Sirga, a small rural town located in the
heart of the Tierra de Campos de Palencia, next to, of course, the Way of Saint
James.
Noticeably
affected by the impact of the earthquake that devastated Lisbon in 1755, its
spectacular Gothic church, dedicated to the figure of Saint Mary the White, and
its old pilgrim hospital, currently converted into an inn, barely remain
standing. But, apart from its legends, relating to hidden treasures and secret
keys, the real treasure lies, above all, in the magnificence of its
architecture and in some spectacular tombs, which, apart from their careful
elaboration - possibly made by the excellent workshops installed in the
neighboring town of Carrión de los Condes, where the famous people who
humiliated the Cid's daughters came from - contain first-rate information about
the life, habits and customs of a time, which was not always as dark as we have
been told made to think.
